Antique Walking Sticks, Distinctive And Beautiful

You can't watch a classic movie from the 1930's without seeing the leading men sporting their most distinctive accessory, a walking stick.  The use of these walking sticks dates back well beyond those movies, to the late 1500's.  Although they are similar to what we think of as a cane, antique walking sticks were regarded in the same way as an article of clothing.  Further, the many varied styles and designs reflected one's status and place in society.

Many antique walking sticks were made from Blackthorn, a winter shrub-like , small tree which grows to a height of about 13 feet.  It is a very sturdy wood, and frequently used for the teeth of hay rakes, and of course, shillelaghs and walking sticks.  The designs of the antique walking sticks can be extremely intricate, again, reflecting the exotic life of its owner.  In addition to the material used to make the stick, the handle area was also where you could find the distinctive features of each walking stick. Some were shaped in the form of a dragon's head, often with the mouth open, and teeth bared.  This type of styling may indicate that one had travelled to the Far East.  Jewels and gemstones  were also widely used to ardorn the top of the walking sticks, again, primarily as a status symbol.  The use of materials other than wood to accent antique walking sticks was also common.  Ivory, gold, silver and porcelain were often used to lend a unique and rich flavor.

Collectors in the market for antique walking sticks, as with anything, should do their homework, and seek out reputable dealers. The cost of these sticks varies widely, from less than $100 to several thousands, depending upon the rarity and detail involved.  As with other types of antiques, some styles are more desirable than others.  One popular type of walking stick is referred to as system canes.  These canes are multipurpose, not in the sense that they are adjustable, but most have the capacity to store items, from small tools, to concealed weapons, within the shaft, much like we use a purse or wallet today.
